Blenheim Vineyards in Winter Marlborough New Zealand

Blenheim Vineyards in Winter ideal for vineyard tours

Blenheim vineyards can be wonderful to visit in Winter for one of our vineyard tours. The town of Blenheim is the main town of the Marlborough wine region and has a great climate. In the Summer, day time temperatures range from 25-30 degrees centigrade however in winter the day time temperatures range from 10-15 degrees centigrade.

Ideal winter temperatures for our vineyard tours as it is not too hot. Night time can be crisp in winter with the temperatures getting as low as -3 degrees centigrade. This leads to crisp mornings with frosts until about 9 or 10am when the frost goes and we get lovely crisp days like on the photographs below. These frosty nights help to kill pests that may be a problem during the growing season.

Vineyard pruning can be seen on vineyard tours

In my previous blog post there were many pictures of the various pruning methods we employ in Marlborough. Pruning starts in April / May during Autumn, however carries on throughout winter. Pruning has to be completed by early September as this is when the vines bud burst for the coming season. Therefore if you are on one of our vineyard tours between May and September you will see the vines at various stages of pruning.

Marlborough employs about 5000 temporary workers from overseas. These workers mainly come from the Pacific Islands or Thailand. New Zealand has a special visa to allow these workers to enter the country and work for up to 8 months before returning home. Most of the workers in the Blenheim vineyards return each year even though the winter climate is very cold for them.

Why you should visit in Winter

Marlborough and New Zealand in general is a great place to visit in Winter. The scenery takes a different turn in the Blenheim vineyards with snow covered mountains and clear blue sky. Marlborough is much quieter and the Cellar doors are not as busy as they are in Summer, therefore not as crowded and rushed as some of them can be in Summer. Ideal for on of our vineyard tours and you may get the expert guide to yourself.
